Centennial Plaza Revitalisation
Centennial Plaza, a once underutilized public space in downtown Edmonton, had fallen into disrepair. In response, the City of Edmonton initiated a revitalization project to transform the plaza into a vibrant, multi-functional space that fosters community engagement. Designed by PFS Studio, the new vision for the plaza integrates a ‘Sensory Garden’ concept, enhancing visitor experiences through sight, smell, sound, and touch. The project aimed to create an inviting, safe, and durable environment that adapts to all four seasons.
PRODUCT SELECTION
To meet the City’s demand for a low-maintenance, secure, and frost-resistant hardscape, the ROMEX System Guarantee (RSG-10) was selected. The system was used to set 2 cm porcelain tiles and included the following ROMEX products:
- ROMEX TRASS BED – for a stable and permeable bedding layer.
- ROMEX ADHESION ELUTRIANT – for superior bonding of the tiles.
- ROMEX D1 – for durable and permeable grout.
- ROMEX FLEX JOINT – to provide flexible control joints.
This combination ensured a long-lasting, resilient paving solution tailored to Edmonton’s challenging climate.

The Centennial Plaza redevelopment had several key requirements and challenges:
- Secure, Trip-Free Surface – The hardscape had to prevent loose tiles and tripping hazards.
- Frost Resistance – Edmonton experiences extreme temperature fluctuations, necessitating a freeze-thaw-resistant paving system.
- Structural Strength with Lightweight Design – The system needed to support scissor lifts and service vehicles while not overloading the suspended roof slab.
- Durability for High-Pressure Cleaning – The paving system had to withstand regular maintenance without compromising integrity.

This project also won an honorable mention at the HNA awards for the Porcelain Paver Pavement – Commercial category.
