Curved Flagstone Walkway and Swim Spa Patio
In the rural setting of Nashville, Ontario, a timeless transformation took shape at a heritage home dating back to the early 1800s. With a desire to preserve the home’s vintage charm while introducing modern functionality, NRX Landscaping led the design and construction of a 1,200-square-foot outdoor space. The final result is a multi-use patio anchored by a swim spa, blending reclaimed materials, contemporary pavers, and ROMEX’s high-performance installation systems for lasting strength and beauty.
PRODUCT SELECTION
To deliver strength, permeability, and visual refinement across a challenging circular design, NRX Landscaping selected the following ROMEX products:
- ROMEX TRASS BED was used beneath the curved flagstone path to provide a permeable and stable foundation that supports structural longevity.
- ROMEX ECOFINE jointing mortar was applied throughout the paved surfaces for high-strength, weed- and ant-resistant joints with long-term permeability.
Complementing these ROMEX materials were two distinct paver products:
- Techo-Bloc Borealis for its textured, earthy wood-look design.
- Unilock Mattoni for accent borders that added historic visual appeal.
PROJECT LOCATION
PROJECT NEEDS
The homeowners envisioned a space that felt as though it had always belonged—natural, weathered, and inviting. Their objectives included:
- A central entertainment area centered around a swim spa.
- A circular layout with radius points aligning pathways, entryways, and lounging zones.
- Maintaining the property’s existing trees, shrubs, and topography.
- Using reclaimed flagstone and natural tones to honor the historical essence of the site.
- Addressing elevation differences due to varying paver thicknesses without compromising design continuity.
- Ensuring permeability and stability for long-term performance across curved flagstone paths.
PROJECT SOLUTION
NRX Landscaping approached the project with artistry and precision. Each section of the patio was carefully planned to create a seamless flow between the swim spa, dining area, walkway, and garden features.
To overcome variable paver thicknesses, different areas were graded at unique elevations, ensuring seamless transitions and surface integrity. For cutting Borealis pavers cleanly and safely, installers scored each unit with a porcelain blade, preventing chipping during customization.
ROMEX TRASS BED provided the ideal base for the curved flagstone paths, delivering high compressive strength and permeability. Paired with ROMEX ECOFINE for the jointing system, the result was a pressure-washable, low-maintenance finish that performs year-round—even in freeze-thaw conditions.
Beyond structure, NRX integrated reclaimed stone from the property, curbed garden edges, and lamp posts that highlighted the organic curves of the design. Existing flora was preserved and celebrated as part of the design narrative.
Throughout the project, the clients remained closely involved—visiting stone yards and refining material choices alongside the NRX team—while giving full creative freedom to bring their dream landscape to life.
