Eagle Island, Bonded Gravel & Flagstone Jointing

An oceanfront property that hosts weddings asks two things of its hardscape at once: survive salt air and a Pacific Coast climate, and stay elegant and safe underfoot for guests in formal shoes. At a private residence on Eagle Island in West Vancouver, British Columbia, the flagstone jointing was failing and the gravel paths were unfit for that foot traffic. Installed in 2022, the renovation used ROMEX® DRAIN to grout the flagstone patio and pathways and ROMEX PROFI-DEKO to bond the gravel paths, for a low-maintenance finish built for both the ocean and the events.

PRODUCT SELECTION

Two products, each matched to a surface and a problem. The flagstone had large, irregular gaps that demanded a robust joint, so ROMEX DRAIN filled them with a durable, drainable resin mortar that lets water pass through and resists salt and frost, ideal for an exposed shoreline. The gravel paths, originally loose stone, were bound with ROMEX PROFI-DEKO into a firm, permeable surface that holds up under wedding foot traffic while keeping a natural aggregate look. Both were selected for durability in oceanfront conditions and low ongoing maintenance.

PROJECT LOCATION

The property sits on Eagle Island, a small waterfront community on West Vancouver’s North Shore with direct ocean exposure. The setting is both prestigious and punishing: salt air, sustained rain, wind-driven moisture, and freeze-thaw all attack weaker joints and scatter loose gravel. The venue use raises the bar further, since surfaces have to be smooth, stable, and safe for guests on foot, including in high heels.

PROJECT NEEDS

The flagstone’s failing joints were the immediate issue, made worse by the wide, irregular gaps that leave more joint to lose. Whatever replaced them had to resist salt, frost, and constant moisture as a baseline, not an upgrade. The gravel paths posed a different problem: loose stone is awkward and unsafe for guests in heels, so the paths had to become firm and stable without losing their aggregate character. Across the grounds, the owner wanted smooth transitions and a long-lasting, low-maintenance finish that would not need attention between events.

PROJECT SOLUTION

ROMEX® DRAIN grouted the flagstone, filling the large joints with a permeable mortar that stands up to salt and frost and lets water drain through rather than pooling or washing the joints out, restoring a stable, finished surface ready for guests. ROMEX PROFI-DEKO bound the gravel paths into a firm, permeable footing safe for heels and easy to maintain through repeated events, while keeping the natural stone appearance. Together they delivered the smooth transitions and durable, low-care finish the property needed, matching the right product to each surface without a rebuild.
