Heated Driveway In Toronto
What began as a straightforward upgrade to a Toronto home quickly turned into a full rethink of how the outdoor spaces should perform, not just look. The homeowner wanted a driveway, front entrance, and side patio by the hot tub that felt like a cohesive extension of the house: beautiful, comfortable underfoot, and strong enough for daily use. At the same time, they wanted a permeable system that could handle water properly and stand up to Toronto’s demanding climate. Greystone Landscaping was brought in to bring that vision to life and turned to ROMEX Hardscapes for the finishing touches that would hold everything together for the long term.
PRODUCT SELECTION
For the walking surfaces, the installer chose ROMEX ECOFINE as the jointing mortar for the Richcliff pathway and Brussels pavers. With larger joint widths and a mix of textures and formats, the project needed a jointing solution that would stay permeable, lock the pavers firmly in place, and keep the look clean and polished over time. ECOFINE was an ideal fit for its strength, permeability, and resistance to washout and weed growth.
The driveway itself was designed as a permeable system from the ground up, using a flex joint material in the surface joints to maintain permeability while providing the flexibility and strength needed to handle vehicle loads. Together, the paver system and jointing choices created a continuous, functional surface from driveway to front entry to side patio.
PROJECT LOCATION
PROJECT NEEDS
- Create a fully functional driveway, welcoming front entrance, and a side patio next to the hot tub, all tied together visually.
- Ensure the surface could handle vehicle traffic on the driveway and regular foot traffic around the home.
- Design the system to be truly permeable, not just at the surface. Stormwater needed to infiltrate quickly through the joints and base layers instead of running off.
- Build a jointing system strong enough for larger joints, so the aesthetic of the chosen pavers was not compromised.
- Integrate modern comfort features, including a glycol-heated driveway, without sacrificing structural integrity or permeability.
With approximately 2,500 square feet of surface, any failure in drainage or stability would have been costly and disruptive. The system had to be right the first time.
PROJECT SOLUTION
The result is a high-performance outdoor space that looks refined and inviting at the front door, feels comfortable and safe around the hot tub, and operates as a permeable, heated driveway that manages water responsibly. For the homeowner, that means a single, integrated hardscape system that performs year-round and stays beautiful with minimal maintenance.
