Jones Beach Energy Nature Centre Bonded Aggregate Walkways
In May 2020, the New York State Office of Parks initiated the construction of the Jones Beach Energy and Nature Centre, a visionary project designed by renowned architectural firms nARCHITECTS and Starr Whitehouse. The goal was to transform an existing parking lot into a sustainable beachscape enriched with local maritime plant life. This environmentally focused initiative required the creation of durable, accessible walkways to enhance visitor experience while preserving the natural aesthetic.
PRODUCT SELECTION
ROMEX PROFI-DEKO resin was chosen as the ideal solution for this project. Known for its superior bonding capabilities, ROMEX PROFI-DEKO securely holds aggregates in place, ensuring a stable, long-lasting surface. Its UV stability prevents degradation under constant sun exposure, making it an excellent choice for the coastal environment of Jones Beach. Additionally, its permeability supports stormwater management, aligning with the project’s sustainability goals.

PROJECT NEEDS
The primary challenge was constructing ADA-compliant walkways that could withstand the harsh coastal climate. Strong winds and heavy rainfall frequently cause loose stones to migrate, creating unsafe and uneven surfaces. The project required a material that would provide a smooth, stable, and low-maintenance pathway, capable of enduring extreme weather conditions while integrating seamlessly with the surrounding environment.
PROJECT SOLUTION
To meet these demands, installation experts Peter Scamander & Sons applied 160 units of ROMEX PROFI-DEKO resin across 1,800 square feet of walkway. Locally sourced ¼-inch Rhode Island Beige stone was selected for its natural appearance and compatibility with the landscape. The ROMEX PROFI-DEKO resin effectively bonded the aggregates, ensuring a firm and even surface resistant to displacement by wind or water.
The completed walkways successfully met both functional and aesthetic objectives. They provided a durable, ADA-compliant surface that enhances accessibility for all visitors, including those using wheelchairs. Thanks to the resilience of ROMEX PROFI-DEKO, the pathways remain intact and maintenance-free, even in extreme weather conditions. This innovative solution not only improved visitor accessibility but also contributed to the project’s commitment to environmental sustainability, ensuring a long-lasting, eco-friendly enhancement to the Jones Beach Energy and Nature Centre.
