A 300 square foot patio faces the same demands as a civic plaza on a fraction of the footprint, with nowhere for a flaw to hide. On Laburnum Street in Vancouver, British Columbia, a homeowner wanted a granite patio that stayed refined with almost no upkeep and satisfied the city’s drainage rules on a compact lot. Built in 2023, the permeable patio used a ROMEX® assembly of TRASS BED, ADHESION ELUTRIANT, ECOFINE, and PROFI-DEKO to hit all three goals. Mister Paver installed it to a design by Ron Rule Consultants.
PRODUCT SELECTION
Strength and permeability drove the choice. ROMEX TRASS BED gave the granite a permeable, frost-resistant bed that carries load while letting water through, and ROMEX ADHESION ELUTRIANT bonded each paver to it so nothing settles or rocks, the kind of flaw that shows instantly on a small premium surface. ROMEX ECOFINE, a resin jointing sand, filled the joints with a bound fill that resists washout and weeds, and ROMEX PROFI-DEKO did double duty as a functional drainage strip and a decorative accent. With TRASS BED, ADHESION ELUTRIANT, and a jointing product in the mix, the patio qualified for the 10-year ROMEX System Guarantee.
PROJECT LOCATION
The patio sits at a private home on Vancouver’s west side, an area where granite and natural stone are the norm and the standard of finish is high. A patio this size is seen up close every day, so the quality of the paving and joints is fully exposed. The site also falls under Vancouver’s drainage regulations, which increasingly require new hard surfaces to manage rainwater on site, a real constraint in a wet coastal climate that also cycles through freeze-thaw.
PROJECT NEEDS
Two connected requirements defined the job. First, the granite had to be locked down for long-term, low-maintenance service, no settling, no rocking, no open joints, and no weeds. On a small, high-visibility patio, those faults are immediately obvious. Second, the buildup had to meet the city’s drainage rules by letting rainwater infiltrate on site rather than shedding it off the edges, all while still functioning as a finished, usable patio. Delivering that permeability without sacrificing stability on such a small area was the real challenge.
PROJECT SOLUTION
The granite was set on a No. 57 clear stone base, bedded on ROMEX TRASS BED, and bonded with ROMEX ADHESION ELUTRIANT, producing a stable, load-bearing plane that stays permeable from the surface down, no impermeable concrete working against the drainage goal. ROMEX ECOFINE grout filled the joints against washout and weeds for easy upkeep, and ROMEX PROFI-DEKO added a bonded aggregate drainage strip that also reads as a design feature. Rainfall runs down through the surface into the stone base, satisfying Vancouver’s requirements while eliminating standing water and freeze-thaw risk. The homeowner and Ron Rule Consultants got a premium granite finish that drains to code, needs little care, and is backed for 10 years, proof the same system used on major plazas scales cleanly to a small private project.
