Los Gatos, California

A steep driveway under heavy loads is one of the hardest tests a paver surface can face, because gradient and weight together push the pavers downhill over time. On a private property in Los Gatos, California, a long access drive climbing grades as steep as 18 degrees needed its concrete pavers secured against exactly that. The answer was a displacement protection system built on ROMEX® ISATec EARTH ANCHORS, installed across roughly 25,000 square feet in 2022 to hold the pavers in place under repeated heavy vehicle access.

PRODUCT SELECTION

The challenge here was movement, not jointing, and conventional joints alone cannot stop pavers creeping downslope under gradient and vehicle weight. ROMEX® ISATec EARTH ANCHORS solve it mechanically: embedded in the bedding with the pavers laid over top, they physically restrain the field so it cannot shift or walk out of position. They were chosen specifically for displacement protection on a steep grade under heavy load. Just as important, the layout can be engineered to the slope, concentrating restraint where gradient and loading demand it rather than applying a uniform grid.

PROJECT LOCATION

The site is a private residential driveway in the hills of Los Gatos, near San Jose, where properties often sit on sloped lots reached by long private drives. The terrain defines the job: grades up to 18 degrees plus turning movements put sustained downslope and lateral forces on the surface, and the driveway carries heavy vehicles, concrete trucks, horse boxes, and similar equipment, that multiply the load and the risk of the pavers shifting over time.

PROJECT NEEDS

The core need was long-term stability under a punishing combination. Gravity works constantly on an 18 degree grade, and the turns add lateral force, so a surface relying only on joint fill will creep and open up no matter how well it is installed. Heavy equipment compounds it, driving the displacement risk higher with every pass. The driveway needed restraint engineered for that class of load and tuned to how the slope varied along its length.

PROJECT SOLUTION

The anchors were embedded in the bedding layer before the pavers went down, tying the restraint into the base of the assembly rather than depending on the joints above. Rows were spaced roughly every 10 to 15 feet and adjusted to local slope severity, tightening where the grade was steepest and easing where it flattened, which concentrates protection where the forces peak. Built into the bedding across about 25,000 square feet and tuned to the terrain, the ISATec system was engineered to keep the concrete pavers stable through years of heavy vehicle access, holding a large surface in place where jointing alone could not.
