Not every hardscape problem needs a rebuild. Sometimes the stone is fine and the binder or joint is what failed. At a private residence in North Vancouver, British Columbia, a homeowner had two such problems: garden pathways shedding loose gravel and growing weeds, and a driveway whose polymeric sand had failed early and become unmaintainable. Completed around 2021 across roughly 1,500 square feet, the renovation used two targeted ROMEX® products, PROFI-DEKO on the paths and FLEX JOINT on the driveway, to fix both surfaces without tearing either out. PRODUCT SELECTION
Each surface got the product matched to its failure, both chosen for durability and easy upkeep. ROMEX PROFI-DEKO, a resin gravel binder, locks loose stone into a firm, permeable path, eliminating the scattering and weed growth that make loose gravel a constant chore, and it binds the existing aggregate rather than replacing it. ROMEX FLEX JOINT, a flexible resin joint rated to 25 tonnes, replaced the driveway’s failed polymeric sand with a permanent joint that flexes with vehicle movement instead of cracking and washing out.
PROJECT LOCATION
The home sits on North Vancouver’s North Shore, where properties commonly mix stone, aggregate, and paver surfaces and owners expect them to look kept without fuss. The North Shore climate is the deciding factor: some of the region’s heaviest rainfall, wet winters, and freeze-thaw, all of which scatter loose gravel and break down failing polymeric sand. Any renovation here had to stand up to sustained moisture across both a pedestrian path and a vehicle-loaded driveway.
PROJECT NEEDS
The two surfaces failed in different ways. The pathways lost their loose gravel to foot traffic and rain, thinning in spots, piling in others, and letting weeds root between the stones, so they never looked finished. The driveway’s polymeric sand had broken down early and become effectively unmaintainable, since re-sanding under vehicle loading is a short-lived patch and the joints kept eroding. Both surfaces needed durability with low maintenance, not another temporary fix.
PROJECT SOLUTION
On the paths, the existing aggregate was bound in place with ROMEX PROFI-DEKO and screeded smooth, turning a shifting gravel surface into a firm, permeable, weed-free one that drains freely in heavy rain, all without replacing the stone. On the driveway, the broken-down polymeric sand was removed and re-jointed with ROMEX FLEX JOINT, giving a stable, permanent joint rated to 25 tonnes that absorbs vehicle movement and stops the failure-and-repair cycle. Two targeted applications, two durable low-maintenance surfaces, and no full rebuild on either.
