Ontario Bonded Gravel Tree Surrounds
Collingwood’s downtown main strip is designed to be walked, shopped, and enjoyed, but its tree surrounds were creating a persistent upkeep problem. Across the boulevard, 65 existing trees sat in pits filled with mulch that constantly drifted, scattered, and needed to be swept back into place. In a high-traffic core, that routine maintenance adds up quickly, both in labor and in lost curb appeal.
In 2023, the City of Collingwood set out to upgrade these tree surrounds with a surface that would look clean, stay put, and still support healthy trees.
PRODUCT SELECTION
For a project that demanded stability without sacrificing permeability, the chosen system was ROMEX PROFI-DEKO resin-bound surfacing. The objective was straightforward: replace mulch in a way that dramatically reduces ongoing maintenance while keeping water moving into the root zone.
ROMEX PROFI-DEKO was paired with 6 mm stone to deliver a clean, consistent finish suited to a prominent downtown streetscape.
PROJECT LOCATION
PROJECT NEEDS
- Replace mulch across 65 existing tree surrounds with a more durable, orderly finish
- Minimize disruption while working along the downtown strip
- Reduce the recurring maintenance of sweeping and resetting displaced mulch and loose
stone - Maintain permeability so the tree pits could still receive water effectively
- Deliver a uniform, professional appearance suitable for a high-visibility municipal setting
PROJECT SOLUTION
For the City of Collingwood, the outcome was immediate and measurable: tree pits that remain watered while requiring far less routine attention. Instead of continually sweeping and pushing material back into the pits, maintenance crews gained a cleaner streetscape with a significantly reduced upkeep cycle, a practical upgrade that supports both public realm appearance and long-term operations.
