Solea Hotel Grounds
In hospitality design, outdoor spaces need to do more than look attractive. They need to perform under constant foot traffic, stay low maintenance over time, and support a smooth guest experience. For landscape architects, specifiers and designers, loose gravel in a public courtyard can quickly become a problem if it shifts, scatters, or creates an uneven walking surface.
That was the challenge at the Solea Hotel in Carlsbad, California, where the design team wanted the natural look of aggregate without the long-term issues that typically come with loose gravel. To help bring that vision to life, Elite Landscape Development Inc. installed a ROMEX PROFI-DEKO system across approximately 2,000 square feet of courtyard space in 2025, creating a surface that was stable, permeable, and better suited for a busy hospitality environment.
PRODUCT SELECTION
ROMEX PROFI-DEKO was selected for this hotel courtyard project because it offered a way to keep the chosen gravel and aggregate in place while maintaining a clean, high-end appearance. In large public spaces, loose gravel often leads to ongoing maintenance concerns such as migration, rutting, uneven areas, and material displacement from frequent pedestrian use.
By using ROMEX PROFI-DEKO, the project team was able to bind the aggregate together into a smooth and durable surface that still preserved the visual appeal of decorative stone. For a hospitality setting where both performance and presentation matter, this made it an ideal choice.

PROJECT LOCATION
PROJECT NEEDS
- Keep gravel and aggregate in place
- Reduce ongoing maintenance requirements
- Improve surface stability in a busy public area
- Maintain permeability for better water management
- Preserve the intended aesthetic of the courtyard design
For landscape architects and specifiers, this is a common design challenge. The desired finish may be beautiful on paper, but in practice, loose materials can create operational headaches if they are not properly stabilized.
