Transforming Flagstone with Artificial Turf and Bonded Gravel
In 2023, NRX Landscaping Inc. undertook a landscaping renovation project to address drainage and stability issues in both turf and hardscape areas. The existing layout suffered from poor water management, which led to frost heave, shifting turf spikes, and unpleasant odours in pet-use areas. Additionally, the aging flagstone in the hardscape area had cracked over time, requiring an innovative and cost-effective solution. The client had goals to enhance drainage, create a surface that will last and improve the overall aesthetics of the space. The use of ROMEX TRASS BEDDING and PROFI-DEKO Gravel Binding Resin provided the ideal solution, with “Grass on Trass” ensuring a stable and permeable foundation for the turf while maintaining a high-quality finish.

The success of this project was largely due to the contractor’s creativity in utilizing ROMEX products in a unique and cost-effective way. TRASS BEDDING and PROFI-DEKO Gravel Binding Resin were chosen not only for their permeability and durability but also for their versatility in addressing multiple challenges on-site. TRASS BEDDING provided a stable and well-draining base for the artificial turf, preventing moisture-related issues, while PROFI-DEKO Resin created decorative, functional, and permeable gravel-bound strips, eliminating the need for costly flagstone replacement.

A common challenge in turf installation is the use of non-permeable materials such as road base or rock dust, which trap moisture and create problems such as:
- Frost Heave: Trapped moisture can freeze and cause the turf layer to shift, leading to damage and uneven surfaces.
- Displaced Metal Spikes: The expansion caused by freezing moisture can push up the metal spikes used to secure the turf.
- Odour: Without proper drainage, pet urine becomes trapped in the bedding layer beneath the turf, leading to persistent odour issues.
Additionally, the existing flagstone in the hardscape area was cracked and required replacement, which could have been costly and labor-intensive.
PROJECT SOLUTION
The use of ROMEX TRASS BEDDING effectively addressed these issues. By laying the TRASS product on a clear base, it created ample void space for liquid drainage. This design allowed moisture to flow deeper into the ground, preventing the accumulation of water beneath the turf and mitigating the risk of frost heave and displaced spikes. The permeability of the TRASS BEDDING also resolved potential odour problems, allowing pet urine to drain away rather than becoming trapped.
TRASS BEDDING also provided a durable and long-lasting structure. Even with heavy rain and the freeze-thaw cycles typical of the region, the bedding maintained its integrity, ensuring the turf would stay in place and perform well over time.
For the cracked flagstone, rather than removing all the stones, the decision was made to cut decorative curved strips and drill drainage holes in the underlying concrete slab. The strips were filled with a mixture of PROFI-DEKO Resin and ¼ inch clear stone, forming a permeable, decorative feature. This solution provided an aesthetically pleasing result and also ensured the durability of the area, as the PROFI-DEKO resin is pressure washer safe and resistant to wear.
Two winters after the project was completed, the turf and hardscaping areas have experienced no issues related to permeability, frost heave, or odour. The permeable base created by the TRASS BEDDING has allowed for proper drainage, ensuring the artificial turf has remained stable and intact throughout varying weather conditions. The decorative strips, created using PROFI-DEKO Resin, continue to enhance the landscape while maintaining their functionality.
The homeowner was initially concerned about the drainage and stability issues that plagued the space, as well as the potential cost and disruption of replacing the aging flagstone. However, after the renovation, they expressed satisfaction with the improved functionality and aesthetics of the area. The turf has remained stable, the odour issues are gone, and the decorative gravel strips add a unique touch to the landscape, meeting all their goals in a cost-effective and lasting way.
