Vernon Island Flagstone Pathway

The homeowners wanted more than just a way to get from their house down to the lake. They imagined a journey that unfolded through the landscape: a winding pathway that followed the natural contours of the property and opened into small pad areas where family and friends could gather, pause, and enjoy the water views. On Vernon Island in Muskoka, Ontario, Rockscape was tasked with turning that vision into a durable, natural stone retreat that felt as if it had always belonged there.

PRODUCT SELECTION

To achieve that balance of beauty, stability, and longevity, Rockscape selected the ROMEX RSG system. The build incorporated ROMEX TRASS BED as the permeable bedding layer, ROMEX ADHESION ELUTRIANT to firmly bond the stone, and ROMEX ECOFINE as the jointing material. ECOFINE was custom colored using a basalt and gray blend so that the joints visually disappeared into the surrounding flagstone and granite. The result was a cohesive, natural look that supported the design intent rather than distracting from it.

PROJECT LOCATION
The project took place on Vernon Island in the heart of Muskoka, Ontario. This region is known for rugged Canadian Shield rock, dramatic shorelines, and high-end lakefront properties where natural stone is a signature design element. Rockscape, a landscape contractor based in
nearby Bracebridge, specializes in this type of work and brought its in-house design expertise to ensure the pathway and pads felt integrated with the island’s character and existing terrain.

PROJECT NEEDS
From the beginning, it was clear that aesthetics alone would not be enough. The design relied on a combination of flagstone and granite pieces in a wide range of sizes and thicknesses. Some of the larger stones sat firmly in place, but many smaller pieces moved underfoot, especially those as small as three inches in diameter. Because every stone was intentionally chosen and set according to a pre-planned layout, any shifting would break the visual flow and compromise the overall design. The homeowners needed a system that could lock this carefully arranged pattern into a single, stable surface without sacrificing the natural look of the stone or the permeability of the installation.
PROJECT SOLUTION
Using the ROMEX RSG system, Rockscape transformed a collection of individually placed stones into one continuous, high-performance surface. ROMEX TRASS BED provided a permeable, structurally sound bedding layer suited to the varying thicknesses of the flagstone and granite. ROMEX ADHESION ELUTRIANT created a strong bond between the stones and the bedding, preventing rocking or displacement. Finally, the custom-colored ROMEX ECOFINE jointing locked everything together from above while allowing water to drain through the system.

Across approximately 1,800 square feet of pathways and pad areas, every stone remained exactly where the design team intended. Installed during the summer of 2025 by Rockscape, the completed project delivered a natural stone experience that feels effortless to walk on, yet is engineered for long-term performance along the Muskoka shoreline.
