Whistler, British Columbia
Few climates test a hardscape as hard as Whistler’s. At a private residence in Whistler, British Columbia, a homeowner needed a driveway, patio, and pathways that could take frost, ice, and heavy snow year after year while staying stable and low-maintenance. The roughly 2,000 square foot installation used one coordinated ROMEX® system, TRASS BED and ADHESION ELUTRIANT for setting, D1 for the joints, and PROFI-DEKO to bond the aggregate paths, delivering all three surfaces without concrete pours or slow mortar-set work. Houston Landscapes installed it to a design by Considered Design.
PRODUCT SELECTION
Buildability and cold-climate performance drove the specification. ROMEX TRASS BED bedded the pavers on a permeable, frost-resistant base that drains meltwater rather than trapping it, the key to preventing frost heave in the mountains, and ROMEX ADHESION ELUTRIANT bonded each unit so it holds under traffic and snow-clearing loads. ROMEX D1, rated to a 7.5-ton axle load and proven against de-icing salt and frost, jointed the driveway and patio, and ROMEX PROFI-DEKO stabilized the stepstone aggregate paths into a firm, permeable surface that resists freeze-thaw displacement. Combining TRASS BED, ADHESION ELUTRIANT, and a jointing product, the paver areas carry the 10-year ROMEX System Guarantee.
PROJECT LOCATION
The residence sits in Whistler, the mountain resort north of Vancouver known for some of the province’s harshest winters. Homes here are finished to a high standard, and their outdoor surfaces have to survive sustained frost, ice, heavy snow, and freeze-thaw, plus the meltwater, de-icing, and snow-clearing traffic that come with a mountain property. Those conditions heave sand-set pavers, crack rigid mortar joints, and scatter loose aggregate, so frost resistance and drainage were baseline requirements across every surface.
PROJECT NEEDS
Three challenges ran through the job. Different pavers across a driveway, patio, and paths needed one consistent setting standard rather than a patchwork of base assemblies. With vehicle traffic, foot traffic, and repeated snow-clearing loads, the pavers had to stay locked in place, since loose sand would let them shift and rock into a hazard on icy ground. And the stepstone aggregate paths had to hold together through repeated freeze-thaw. Underlying all of it, the team wanted to avoid concrete pours and mortar-set delays and keep the assembly permeable.
PROJECT SOLUTION
Every unit paver, driveway and patio alike, was set on the same TRASS BED and ADHESION ELUTRIANT system and jointed with ROMEX D1, giving the whole property one stable, permeable base regardless of the paver above it. The bonded bed holds the units against traffic and snow-clearing loads while draining meltwater away before it can freeze and heave, and the salt-resistant D1 joints stay intact through the winter cycle. The stepstone paths were bonded with ROMEX PROFI-DEKO into a firm, permeable, freeze-thaw-resistant surface. Because the assembly is bonded rather than poured, the build skipped concrete and mortar-set work entirely, speeding installation and keeping every surface draining, with the paver areas backed for 10 years.
