ROMEX® TRASS BED
Paver Bedding
Ideal for roads, streets, public spaces and driveways
This frost-resistant permeable paver base is formed by mixing with ASTM #9 stone and water. Once levelled, our thin-set product is applied on the back of each paver to form a wet-on-wet, bonded connection with the TRASS BED
that eliminates paver movement. This concrete mud slab replacement combines both the mortar, and slab bed layer, creating a faster installation. TRASS also contains approximately 30% less embodied carbon than concrete, making it a sustainable substitution for on-slab applications.
WEATHER WARNINGS – Only install at temperatures between 5°C – 30°C | 41°F – 86°F. This product is used in our ROMEX System Guarantee assembly which comes with warranty for 10-years. covering is required if rain is expected. Do not install on frozen ground is in the forecast.

ROMEX® – TRASS BED is a cementitious binding agent with TRASS minerals for the production of highly water- permeable bedding compound suitable for vehicles at least 40 Tons. The compound is laid on a permeable frost-resistant base course or sloped structural slab. TRASS eliminates paver shifting, rutting, creep, dips, and aspect ratio issues, making large-format pavers driveway-friendly. Suitable for all applications including driveways, patios, walkways, pool decks, streets, public spaces and is fully compatible with radiant heat systems. Option to use as part of our system guarantee which includes the ROMEX 10-year warranty.
Construction Site Prerequisites ensure a load-bearing, water-permeable base. Adequate slope is necessary for water evacuation on both surface and subsurface levels. Corresponding drainage measures are essential for eliminating accumulated water e.g underdrains and drainage holes and to prevent any bath tubbing effect. Impermeable liners, such as those for foundations, should be used where water penetration is prohibited.
Mixing Ratio – 1 part ROMEX® – TRASS BED COMPOUND – 4 parts filler material (e.g., ASTM #9 stone 1/4”) – Approximately 8-10 liters | 2.1-2.6 gallons of water (adjust based on filler material dampness)
Installation – Mix TRASS BED with filler material at a ratio of 1:4 until a moist consistency is achieved, mixing for 3-4 minutes. A full bag of TRASS is equivalent to a 5-gallon bucket so a full bag will require 4 buckets of ASTM # 9 stone 1/4”. Initially, add approximately 7 litres | 1.85 gallons of water – if needed after 3 minutes of mixing gradually add more water until the mortar mixture becomes slightly shiny and can be rolled into a firm ball. Use a large-capacity mixer for optimal results. Alternatively, a wheelbarrow or mortar tub can be used for smaller amounts. After mixing, the TRASS mix is ready for immediate use. For half batches, cut the bag in half at the predefined red TRASS mark below.
Application – The TRASS bedding thickness should be 4-10 cm | 11⁄2″ – 4″ deep, depending on expected loads and the type of stone/tile used. Ensure consistent base height using an altimeter/ laser level/ string line and or screed bars. Maintain specified TRASS depth throughout to avoid compromising anticipated loads or quantity shortages. Set string lines for squareness when setting first stones. Set screed bars using TRASS bedding only. Lay/screed out the ready-mixed TRASS loosely to the appropriate depth. Do not compact. Pre-treated pavers/tiles with ROMEX® –
ADHESION ELUTRIANT Thin Set are laid at the correct height and tapped into place. If the area must be accessed, use plywood to disperse weight and always work from plywood sheets. Periodically check for unbonded loose pavers/tiles and reapply as needed.
General Rule – Volume (V) indicates the spatial content of a geometric body. Fill a 5-gallon bucket with a 25 kg | 55lbs bag of TRASS and mark the fill level. Then fill the filler material up to this mark to achieve equal volumes of materials.
